Storm types in Bangladesh: duration, intensity and area of intra‐daily wet events

We explore the characteristics of 96,190 wet events (WEs) defined as consecutive 3-hourly rainfall ≥ 1 mm/3 hr from a network 34 stations across Bangladesh. Nearly 60% (5%) WEs last ≤ 3 (≥ 15) hr. The are dynamically clustered into four “canonical” storm types (STs), mostly discretized by their duration, but also mean and maximal intensity. While durations, total amounts contiguous areas positively related, intensity is nearly independent them. Approximately associated with ST#1, characterized short small very low (usually <10 mm), ~30% either (ST#2) short/small intense rainfall, probably related to scattered thunderstorms or (ST#3) longer/larger less rainfall. ST (ST#4) rare (~6%), long durations large includes wettest WEs. It especially frequent over southeastern ST#2–ST#4 contribute almost equally local-scale amount (27–29% each in mean) while despite its individual amount, still ~15% it. ST#2 highest probability occurrence (daily) extremes. ST#4 most impacted synoptic Indian lows/depressions well main modes intra-seasonal variation, ST#1 significantly reverse manner than ST#4.
